Margaret "Peggy" Louise Hartwell
March 14, 1941 – January 29, 2026 · Columbus, Ohio
Margaret Louise Hartwell — known to everyone who loved her as Peggy — passed away peacefully at home on January 29, 2026, surrounded by her family. She was 84 years old.
Born in Columbus, Ohio, on March 14, 1941, Peggy was the daughter of Harold and Ruth Simmons. She spent nearly four decades as a third‑grade teacher at Washington Elementary School, where she was beloved for her patience, her hand‑painted classroom decorations, and her unwavering belief that every child could learn to love reading.
Peggy is survived by her husband of 58 years, Robert Hartwell; her children, Carol (David) Mercer and James (Alicia) Hartwell; and five grandchildren who called her Grandma Peg. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Thomas Simmons.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 7, at 11:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, Columbus. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to the Columbus Public Library Foundation in Peggy's name.

— Marcus T., son
"Simple, fast, and genuinely moving. I edited maybe three sentences. It was ready in the time it would have taken me just to write a first draft."
